#59 - Dirty South

Arguably the biggest house music talent to emerge from the Australian electronic music scene. "Amazing gigs, lots of production," says Dragan Roganović, aka Dirty South, in surmising 2009. The Macedonian-born, Australia-dwelling DJ and producer has certainly been keeping the right company, producing tracks with his muckers Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso, while stopping off on his three-month European tour early this year. Both, he hopes, will also feature on his debut album, which, once he's finished building his studio, he hopes to get cracking on before the end of the year.

Along with fellow New York house DJs David Morales and Danny Tenaglia, Sanchez has become an icon of the European party scene, especially on the Spanish island of Ibiza, notoriously known worldwide for its hedonistic lifestyle and nightlife. He has maintained residency on Ibiza every summer since 2000.

Born in San Blas in Madrid, in 1976, Angel David (Wally) López started his career as a DJ and radio presenter at the early age of thirteen. With an innovative programme, specialized in dance music, he broadcasted his sessions at Top Radio (Spain) in the early mornings of the weekend. Wally, a pioneer of the house music in Spain, started his career as a producer in 2000 by launching the label Weekend Records, and remixing artists such as Tiësto, Marco V, Valentino Kanzyani, Dirty Vegas, Bob Sinclar and Robbie Riviera. Many of his records are successfully published with renowned labels including Defected, Underwater, Yoshitoshi and Subliminal. Enough facts, here's to some bumpin music!

He has had his songs played by top DJs like Tiësto and Armin van Buuren as well as his tracks appearing on famous trance compilations such as In Search of Sunrise 4: Latin America and A State of Trance 2006. He is currently producing a new album, to be released August 2010.

As with most people involved in the dance music industry, 2009 has not been without its many trials and tribulations for Astral Projection, but all-in-all it's been a good year for the duo from Tel Aviv.

The most influential DJ/producer in contemporary minimal techno, Chilean-German Ricardo Villalobos consolidated his popularity in 2009. Villalobos still spins vinyl and has claimed that digital music is "very bad for electronic music and music in general," while his production also follows a similarly offbeat approach. "I don't have any rule about how I approach music making," he said in an interview with Underground TV this year. "There is an atmosphere in the studio and things just start happening, with the bass drum or with a bassline or a soundscape - I never have a plan. If you try to re-invent yourself, that's very complicated and many times, you don't succeed."

Sharam is an Iranian-American progressive house DJ and producer, forming one half of the Grammy award-winning DJ/production duo, Deep Dish. Being characterized by a distinct style compared to his partner Ali "Dubfire" Shirazinia who produces dark minimal house/techno. Sharam has performed as Deep Dish featuring Sharam, when he plays as the different half of the distinguished Deep Dish sound. 'Get Wild', his latest album, features appearances from an eclectic group of collaborators, from Cudi to former Motley Crue bad boy Tommy Lee, Public Enemy's Chuck D, Daniel Bedingfield and P Diddy. He has almost another whole album's worth of material in the can too, so we can expect to see some of that in the new year.

Russian duo Moonbeam are well deserving of their debut landing in this year's Top 100. Plying their trade and building their diverse sound since 2003, the two brothers - Pavel and Vitaly Khavleev - have been responsible for countless deep, melodic and atmospheric techno EPs on respected German label Traum Schallplatten, as well as progressive styled cuts on labels like Proton and more epic trance moments on Armin's Armada.

Garnering respect and playlisting from DJs as varied as DJ Hell, Judge Jules, John Digweed, Paul van Dyk, Jimmy Van M, Sharam and Tiësto over the years, Moonbeam have got their production sound locked - whatever sound they turn to.

Dutch trance jock Piet Bervoets (pictured on right) flies solo as Rank 1 when DJing, but for live gigs he's joined by studio partner Benno De Goeji (^left), who he's been working with for ten years. Piet hits the road for DJ duties, while studio wizard Benno stays behind working on productions for the pair, as well as putting his magic touches to Armin Van Buuren's albums.

Of their live shows, Piet says: "We practice a lot for this. I do the arrangements while Benno is playing live. It's nice, it's a challenge to do it live, it's a challenge to do everything good when you do it live."

Sébastien Léger has been at the top of his game for a decade now - respected by his contemporaries and idolised by those who worship at the altar of pleasure-seeking dance music. However, that doesn't mean the Amsterdam-dwelling French DJ/producer isn't still in thrall to his own heroes, as his highlight of 2009 attests: "Opening for Dubfire and Richie Hawtin at this year's Global Gathering in Ukraine was an absolute privilege," he outlines. "I love their music. I actually opened for Richie 10 years ago, so to do it again was so good!" For Léger, that experience rounded off what has been an incredible 2009. Granted, the year was tough, what with the economic downturn, but like many others, Léger just thinks this made people party in a more overt manner. <<<<<<< AND I AGREE!!!! In December 2007 Marcus Schossow, Dj Eco and Maor Levi created a project named Deadrat6 as a joke on Deadmau5, claiming his tracks sound alike. As a counter-move, Deadmau5 created a track under the artist name "Marcus Fatsow". In the 330th episode of A State of Trance, Armin van Buuren played the song Deadrat6 - Very Exactly, which is a track made by Marcus Schossow and Maor Levi to joke on Deadmau5's name. At the beginning of the program Armin said "New tunes coming in the next 2 hours by Deadmau5, and I think he's got a little brother because we got a tune by Deadrat6 too." Schossow also wrote "haha, Armin played my Deadrat6 joke" on his MSN Messenger.

The rivalry between Deadmau5 and Schossow escalated at an event in April 2008 in Oslo, where, according to Marcus Schossow, Deadmau5 refused to play at a club if Marcus Schossow was going to play afterwards. This lead to Marcus Schossow being refused entry and made the night a Deadmau5 solo-event.

PWNED!!!!

Many people got pissed as fuck that Marcus didn't get to play. Personally I think this is hilarious.

One of my favorite posts so far. Born Roman Boër on June 8, 1974, DJ Tocadisco grew up in a small city near Cologne, Germany. His professional DJ career started in 1996 at Düsseldorf's UNIQUE Club from where he moved to Cologne to open up his own studio.

Dutch progressive trance DJ and producer from Rotterdam. A newcomer on the top 100, Sied is due for greatness quoted by Armin van Buuren in 2008 as his favorite producer of the year. First album to be released in 2010 but he's released a ton of singles:
